Recall Alert: Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter Chunky

If you have recently bought peanut butter over the past week or so, you need to be aware of a recall for select 16 ounce jars of Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter Chunky. These jars can be identified by the UPC # 5150001701, product number of 1307004 or 1308004, and have a "Best if used by" date of August 3, 2012 or August 4, 2012. Smucker's says the products were distributed between November 8 - 17, 2011. Only select chunky products are part of this recall and does not affect their creamy peanut butter products.

The recall is due to the discovery of salmonella in these products. This bacterial presence is known to cause illness when ingested in the form of fever, cramps, and diarrhea. In some cases, those exposed to salmonella may require hospitalization and serious injuries can result in children, elderly, and those who are immune compromised. At the time of this recall, no known illnesses had been reported.

This peanut butter was made at J.M. Smucker's plant in Orrville, Ohio, but product is distributed in 25 states including Ohio, Arkansas, Colorado, New York, and Texas.

Affected products should not be used and customers should contact Smucker's customer service to receive a coupon for a replacement product. Their customer service phone number is 1-888-550-9555 and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
